Abstract
Objectives£ºPatients with bipolar disorder have high rate of comorbid of alcohol use disorder. However, there are lack of evidences about the different patterns of alcohol consumption between depressive patients with bipolarity and without bipolarity in Korea. We aimed to compare problematic drinking according to bipolarity in depressive patients.

Methods£ºWe recruited Seventy three patients who have experienced depressive disorders. Bipolarity was evaluated by using the Mood Disorder Questionnaire(MDQ). Problematic drinking behavior was measured by using Alcohol Use Disorder Identification Test(AUDIT). The AUDIT score was compared between depressive patients with positive and negative screening in MDQ using independent t-test and analysis of covariance(ANCOVA) in SPSS version 18.0, to adjust the influence of age.

Results£ºPatients with depressive disorders who screened positive on MDQ showed higher AUDIT scores than those with negative MDQ scores(independent t-test t=-2.767, p=0.007) After controlling age, difference of AUDIT score was still significant between two groups(ANCOVA F=7.160, p=0.009).

Conclusion£ºThese results suggest that the presence of bipolarity in depressive patients may accompanies more problematic drinking behaviors than the absence of bipolarity group. Consideration of bipolarity measured by MDQ may be necessary in the detection of high risk group of problematic drinking in depressive patients. Large-scale study would be needed to confirm these results.
